Singing birds, spectacular views over the iconic Glasshouse Mountains, serene waterfalls, fun with bunnies and goats, and a pig that sits for a carrot like a dog. This list isn't something I dreamt of after a hard day. It is real and it is all waiting for you at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World . This is a school holiday must-do and a place that will please both young and old.


The bird tour requires a booking and involves looking, touching, talking with, and chilling with a wide range of stunning and entertaining birds. My kids thought this was the highlight. The tour goes for an hour and requires the removal of all metal jewellery. The tour guide is very informative and many of the birds are rescue creatures now living their best life in rehab.


Located two hours north of Brisbane in the quaint region of Maleny, do not be put off by the commute. If you live on the Gold Coast, the drive will be worth it. If you live in Brisbane, the drive will be worth it. If you live on the Sunshine Coast, well then, aren't you the lucky one? This is a place you can visit easily again and again. Bird World is also found off Mountain View Road which is a beautiful drive along the volcanic rim with sweeping views to the south across historic rock forms. There is a great restaurant or two along this strip and a nature reserve with an attached cafe if you find you need more than the Botanic Gardens and Bird World squished into a day of activity. Believe me, my kids have loads of energy and even they couldn't muster up a stop along Mountain View Road on the way home but if your family can, hats off to you!


Tickets to enter Bird World, Farm Friends and the Gardens are $42 for adults and $27 for kids over three. Little ones under three are free. Pensioner concessions are available. You can also purchase a Family Day Pass which represents great value for those of us with big families. Let's face it - in the current climate taking our kids anywhere can be expensive so family deals like this are so appreciated.


You are probably wondering what Farm Friends are. This is a petting zoo with pigs, guinea pigs, donkeys, rabbits, goats, chickens, cows, and loads of space in which you can pull up a seat and enjoy the look on your child's face. We were there for my daughter's birthday and it was hot! Very hot! So I would recommend hats, sunscreen, water, money for iceblocks and lightweight backpacks for when you get all the way down to the bottom of the farm and your kids need you to carry their things back up. The attached cafe serves solid cafe food with vegan rolls, deep-fried treats, milkshakes and great coffee. The salads and meals are not restaurant quality but they are hot, fresh and delicious. And they will meet your budget.
